In 2001, the Washington Health Department sought a sweeping waiver from the federal government that would give it the power to slash benefits and increase cost-sharing for Medicaid participants. With NWFCO support, WCA established the “Don’t Waiver on Health Care Coalition” that organized to stop the waiver and bring the decision-making process out into the public. After two years of organizing, the state agency withdrew its blanket waiver request and limited its request to imposing premiums on children. WCA and NWFCO continue to fight this proposal.
