NWFCO WINS A NEW AND IMPROVED FOOD STAMP PROGRAM, INCLUDING RESTORED ELIGIBILITY FOR THOUSANDS OF IMMIGRANTS!
In 2002, NWFCO, in partnership with the National Campaign for Jobs and
Income Support, led a national effort to improve the Food Stamp Program
during the reauthorization of the Farm Bill. The work
resulted in:
- Additional funding of nearly $7 billion dollars,
- Eligibility restored for 360,000 previously disqualified immigrants,
- Able-bodied adults without dependents allowed to receive food stamps
for up to 6 out of 24 months, rather than the current limit of 3 out of
36 months,
- More of a family’s income disregarded, which will result in higher food
stamp benefits and more families being eligible,
- Increased benefits for families with children and people with
disabilities, and;
- Quality control burdens on the states eased, which will result in fewer
hassles at welfare offices.
