WASHINGTON CITIZEN ACTION WINS THE ACT FOR HUNGRY FAMILIES!

On March 22, 2004 Senate Bill 6411 -- often called the Act for Hungry Families -- was signed into law. Since January 2003, Washington Citizen Action fought hard to pass this legislation that will greatly improve access to the Food Stamp Program and school nutrition programs in Washington State. Over 25,000 individuals in Washington State could become newly eligible for the Food Stamp Program because of changes that include: five months of the Basic Food program for families transitioning from cash assistance to work; streamlined reporting requirements; and restoration of Food Stamp Program eligibility for people with former drug-related felonies who have completed their sentences.
